Crafting a Compelling Narrative Through Immersive Media
Boston University tasked our team with creating a captivating experiential campaign that would immerse donors and alumni in the rich history of Boston. The challenge: tell the city’s story through a 90-minute live ice skating performance that seamlessly blended live skaters, dancers, interactive video projection, and a live orchestral score by the Boston Pops Orchestra.
Our approach was to design compelling, cinematic visuals that transformed the ice rink into a living canvas, using projection mapping to elevate each chapter of Boston’s history — from the civil rights movement to the Great Boston Fire to the founding of the university itself.
Integrating Teams Across Multiple Disciplines
Bringing this ambitious project to life required a highly coordinated effort with choreographers, composers, set designers, and show producers. Our role was to create video projection content that not only synchronized with the live performances but also drove the emotional narrative forward.
We developed multiple animation styles to suit each historical segment, utilizing 3D modeling, particle simulations, and motion graphics that aligned with the show’s artistic direction. The content was strategically mapped onto the rink, drapes, and on-stage screens, transforming the entire venue into an immersive storytelling experience.
Delivering Impactful Visuals and
Lasting Impressions
The final production was a resounding success, drawing praise from award-winning producers at Disney on Ice and securing significant media coverage. The visually immersive experience left a lasting impression on donors and alumni, demonstrating the university’s commitment to using cutting-edge media to tell powerful stories.

Pushing Boundaries with xR Training
To push the visual capabilities of this project, we underwent specialized training in Notch real-time graphics software and Disguise xR technology, exploring new methods for creating interactive, multi-dimensional content. While the final execution leaned heavily on projection mapping, the xR training reinforced my ability to conceptualize and execute interactive and immersive environments, bridging the gap between live performances and virtual worlds.
